When criticism itself becomes evidence of a conspiracy, meaningful debate becomes impossible.

THE BIG QUESTION

Why have a number of high profile commentators and figures including JD Vance, Megyn Kelly, and Cenk Uygur, and others, responded to criticism of their obsession with Israel by suggesting that the backlash itself was paid for by Israel? And why is Israel always treated as uniquely suspect when engaging in forms of legally declared public diplomacy that almost all governments pursue and states like Qatar do covertly?

WHAT’S AT STAKE

This debate is about much more than one disagreement over Israel or Iran. It goes to the heart of democratic discourse and whether criticism should be answered on its merits or dismissed as the product of hidden influence. If every challenge to a controversial argument can simply be explained away as the work of a coordinated campaign, public debate stops being about evidence and becomes an exercise in conspiracy. That standard is particularly troubling when it is applied selectively to only one country and only one community.

THE BACKGROUND

Vice President JD Vance recently argued in his interview with Joe Rogan that there was “a literal foreign influence campaign being funded to tank the very deal that I was pursuing,” referring to criticism surrounding his Iran diplomacy. He further described it as a “very discreet” and “extremely well-funded” campaign by the Israeli government.

Similarly, after facing criticism over her recent anti-Israel shift, newly Woke Right podcaster Megyn Kelly claimed, “The only people who have ever tried to buy into my show are Israeli representatives,” suggesting that Israeli actors were attempting to influence her platform rather than addressing the substance of the criticism against her.

<picture></picture>

<g>

</g><polyline points="15 3 21 3 21 9"></polyline><polyline points="9 21 3 21 3 15"></polyline><line x1="21" x2="14" y1="3" y2="10"></line><line x1="3" x2="10" y1="21" y2="14"></line>

Vice President of the United States J. This follows weeks of harassment by Bruesewitz against both Israeli, Jewish and Iranian accounts who were openly critical of the MoU. Suspiciously, hundreds of accounts criticizing JD Vance and the MoU were “mysteriously” suspended after interacting with Bruesewitz and falsely accused of “coordinated inauthentic behavior,” fueling speculation that Bruesewitz himself was involved in their suspension as that was exactly what he was falsely claiming — including about people who were American veterans!

Meanwhile, Notorious Jew hater Ana Kasparian has written that pro-Israel critics “smear you to silence you,” while Cenk Uygur has repeatedly complained that allegations of antisemitism are deployed to shut down his “criticism of Israel” (which of course is usually not criticism of Israel, rather overbroad bad faith generalizations about ‘Zionists’). Most recently, Michael Knowles also joined the chorus, suggesting that criticism of his defense of JD Vance reflected a coordinated foreign influence effort rather than ordinary political disagreement.

None of this means foreign influence should escape scrutiny. Every government trying to shape American opinion deserves review. The question is much narrower: does the existence of a publicly declared Israeli communications campaign prove Israel secretly orchestrated criticism of the U.S.-Iran MoU? After days of headlines, no evidence has been produced to support that claim.

DRIVING FORCES

This isn’t really about JD Vance. It isn’t even about the MoU. It’s about a pattern that has become impossible to ignore. Why has this become such an attractive tactic for the Woke Right and other antisemites? Because alleging a conspiracy is far easier than defending a bad faith argument. Once criticism can be dismissed as “foreign influence”, there is no need to answer it on the merits. Figures on the Woke Right and the anti-Israel left alike have increasingly portrayed ordinary political disagreement as evidence of hidden coordination involving Israel or Jews.

FAULT LINE

There are two very different issues being conflated here.

The first is whether Israel engages in public diplomacy. Of course it does. Like countless other governments. In this instance, those activities were disclosed through the Foreign Agents Registration Act (FARA), exactly as U.S. law requires.

The second issue, and the one generating headlines, is the far more serious allegation that Israel orchestrated a campaign to manufacture opposition to the Iran MoU or direct criticism at Vice President JD Vance, Megyn Kelly or Alex Bruesewitz. That claim is extraordinary, but entirely unsubstantiated.

More concerning is the fact that the double standard is difficult to ignore. Governments around the world spend enormous sums shaping opinion in Washington, many through far less transparent means.

Qatar has spent years building one of the largest foreign influence networks in the United States. According to the U.S. Department of Education. Qatar has provided billions of dollars to American universities, making it the largest foreign source of university funding, while lawmakers and federal officials have repeatedly raised concerns about transparency and undisclosed foreign influence in the spheres of media and communications as well as academia.

Yet somehow, this receives a fraction of the outrage. Instead, Woke Right voices like Alex Bruesewitz and JD Vance have elevated a publicly declared Israeli communications contract which clearly states what content was involved, into “proof” of a sweeping conspiracy against the Iran MoU—even though the contract produced doesn’t demonstrate such a campaign has ever existed. For the Woke Right, simply pointing to the word “Israel” is enough, and any Americans who opposed the MoU on its merits are written off as puppets rather than citizens capable of reaching their own conclusions.

THE OVERLOOKED FACTOR

Being criticized is not the same thing as being silenced. Receiving pushback on social media is not censorship. Being accused of bias, prejudice or factual error is not getting “canceled”. The same First Amendment principles that protect controversial speech also protect vigorous disagreement with that speech. That distinction is increasingly being blurred...including by the Vice President of the United States.

THE BROADER LESSON

Democratic societies function when arguments are answered with evidence rather than dismissed through allegations of hidden coordination. The anti-Jewish conspiracies being tossed around to dismiss legitimate criticism of bigoted statements and views, or simply to express a dissenting political opinion, are unhealthy, irresponsible, and untrue.

It is okay to scrutinize foreign influence, but criticism deserves the same protection as the speech that provoked it. Treating disagreement as proof of conspiracy weakens the very principles of free expression that some of these public figures claim to defend.

Emily in Tel Aviv

Come inside Emily’s world each My network of sources and partners spans from the United States to Europe to Israel to Iran and to the wider region. I have more than 100,000 social media followers in Iran alone, which is unprecedented for an Israeli journalist. I was among the first reporters granted access to Gaza after October 7th – somewhere I have reported from numerous times, and I have been embedded as media with the Israel Defense Forces for stories on counterterrorism operations in Judea and Samaria (the West Bank) as well as on Israel’s northern border with Syria and Lebanon alike.

Beyond Israel’s threats at the borders, I also have real, hard-won expertise on Iranian history, culture, religion, and foreign policy.
